Libba Bray (author of the Gemma Doyle trilogy and Going Bovine) wrote Beauty Queens after Scholastic editor and author David Levithan (Boy Meets Boy) dared her to write a book based on the simple premise: "a plane carrying teen beauty pageant survivors crashes on an island." The results are unsurprisingly hilarious, but also an awesome twist on feminism, what it means to be female, consumerism, sexuality, gender, race, and friendship. It's kinda reads like a smart, modern, campy version of Lord of the Flies.
But Wait, Let Libba Tell You Herself
Check out this video of author Libba Bray talking about Beauty Queens:
Also, if you like listening to books on CD, check out the Beauty Queens audiobook. Libba Bray reads it, and considering there are over two dozen different characters in the story, it's completely amazing to hear her do so many different voices. It's definitely one of the best audiobooks out there!
Libba Interviews…Libba
Read this Omnivoracious interview that Libba conducts with…herself. It's pretty humorous and tells you even more about Beauty Queens.
