We're rolling into autumn, which means it is time to curl up with a horror novel. Chilly winds and falling leaves remind me of all my teenage favorites. Horror doesn't have to mean blood and gore, but if you are squeamish, avoid the end of the list.
- Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury
Written in 1962, this is the grand-daddy of creepy-carnival-comes-to-town stories. Would you trust any wish granted by the Cooger & Dark's Pandemonium Shadow Show?
- Full Tilt by Neal Shusterman
Two brothers must survive a demonic theme park or lose their souls.
- The Iron King by Julie Kagawa
The cover looks like a sweet fairy story, but guess again. When Megan's darling little brother is switched for a vicious, leg-chomping changeling, she goes on a quest to save him.
- xxxHolic by Clamp
The witch Yuko grants wishes that never quite go right in this sinister manga. Her assistant Watanuki provides comic relief while being chased by demons and ghosts.
- The Things on the Doorstep and Other Weird Tales by H.P. Lovecraft
Creepy tales from another master. "Rats in the Walls" is a lovely little shocker.
- The Sandman Series by Neil Gaiman
Gaiman became famous because of this very graphic comic book series that features The Lord of Dreams, who has been imprisoned for 70 years. It's a series filled with fable and lots of blood. Readers with tender tummies should avoid. And meant for older teens.
- Salem's Lot by Stephen King
The way vampires ought to be--violent and gory.
So, enjoy . . . with the lights on.
Author Bio:
Cynthia R. is a librarian at Foster City and is a total wimp when it comes to horror movies. Freddy v. Jason was the last one she watched in a theatre, through her fingers and mushed down in her chair.
