What a Cheesy Day

Photo of a cheese pizza. That’s A Lot of Pizza

Looks like Americans eat 350 slices of pizza per second, according to the party planning website Punchbowl. Amazing! That’s something to celebrate. Fortunately, September 5th is National Cheese Pizza Day.

Party! Pizza Party!

In the ‘80s, there was a board game all about pizza called “Pizza Party.” Unless you were 7 years old, it was super dorky…yet kinda awesome. The commercial for the game was really silly and sometimes the weird song from it still gets stuck in my head:

Mystic Pizza Moments

There are also lots of movies that feature classic pizza moments, and luckily they are documented for us in the Pizza in the Movies Tumblr. Some examples include Be Kind Rewind (starring Jack Black), Dazed and Confused, It’s Kind of a Funny Story, and, of course, everyone’s favorite sewer-dwelling pizza connoisseurs, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Rats in the Pizza and Pizza Technicians

Find pizza in books:

In Please Ignore Vera Dietz, by A. S. King, high school senior Vera is a “pizza technician.” According to her, it’s a hard life, being a pizza delivery driver.

Now imagine if you’ve never tasted pizza in your life. That’s exactly Cap Anderson’s experience in Schooled, by Gordon Korman. Raised by an eccentric, hippie grandma, Cap has led a bit of a sheltered existence. When he enters public school for the first time, he has a lot to learn about: tv shows, driving--even wedgies!

There’s this person that my friend’s mother’s cousin knows who once got a pizza delivered and it was full of cheese and pineapples and rats…. Or something like that. In Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid: The Book of Scary Urban Legends, you can read about all kinds of weird (usually fake) stories like “Rats in the Pizza.” Snopes.com also has some good pizza-related myths as well.
